Details:

Ezra Ramsdell Revolutionary War pay receipt, printed document completed in manuscript, dated Hartford, Connecticut, November 12, 1783. Issued by Connecticut’s Pay-Table Committee, the document acknowledges receipt of “Three pounds three shillings & eleven pence” as the balance due to Ramsdell on January 1, 1782, as determined by the committees of the State and Army. The receipt reads in part:

“Received of Pay-Table Committee, their Order on the Treasurer of this State, to secure the Payment of Three pounds three shillings & eleven pence being the Balance due to Ezra Ramsdell on the first Day of January 1782, as stated by the Committees of the State and of the Army.”

The receipt is signed on behalf of Ramsdell and bears contemporary docketing to the reverse identifying the payment and date. Issued just months after the signing of the Treaty of Paris formally ended the Revolutionary War, the document represents the settlement of military compensation owed to a Connecticut soldier following the conclusion of American independence.

The Connecticut Pay-Table Committee was responsible for administering military compensation and settling accounts with soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War.
