A rare map of the harbour of Brest, an important French naval base during the American Revolutionary War. Admiral de Grasse's fleet, which played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Chesapeake in September 1781 and the subsequent American victory at Yorktown, had set sail from Brest earlier in the year. The port was also a key center for shipbuilding, repairs, and the supply of military campaigns. Its strategic location attracted British blockades, underscoring its significance. by Lodge, John.
