A rare map of the harbour of Brest, an important French naval base during the American Revolutionary War. Admiral de Grasse's fleet, which played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Chesapeake in September 1781 and the subsequent American victory at Yorktown, had set sail from Brest earlier in the year. The port was also a key center for shipbuilding, repairs, and the supply of military campaigns. Its strategic location attracted British blockades, underscoring its significance. by Lodge, John. Published Between March and April 1780. Antique copperplate map. The accompanying text article, originally published with the map, will be included. Size 24 x 33 cm | 9.5 x 13.0 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. The map was published in two separate sections, with a thin horizontal strip including some of the printed area lacking from the lower part of the combined map; the two sections have been conjoined using paper from the margin of one of the parts. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. This is a folding map. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain.
