The German and Serbian Military Colonies in Ukraine and Russia are marked on the map in pink. These colonies were rural settlements established by ethnic Germans (often called "Volga Germans," "Black Sea Germans," or "Russian Germans") who were invited by Russian rulers, especially Catherine the Great, to settle and develop underpopulated or frontier lands. These settlements flourished between the mid-18th and late 19th centuries and existed in various regions, including parts of present-day Ukraine, southern Russia, Moldova, and Kazakhstan. Volga German Colonies, founded from 1764 onward, were located near the Volga River, especially around Saratov and Samara, and were established following Catherine the Great’s manifesto of 1763 inviting Europeans to settle in Russia. After the Russian Revolution (1917), many German communities suffered under collectivization and anti-religious campaigns. Under Stalin during WWII, most Germans were deported to Siberia or Central Asia as "enemy aliens," especially after the Nazi invasion in 1941.
