Title: Map of the Kingdom of Hanover with the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg… Wyld 1843Description: Map of the Kingdom of Hanover with the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, the Principality of Lippe Detmold and Schaumburg Lippe, likewise the territories of the Free Towns of Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck, conformably with the Treaty of Paris.'. Hanover was linked to Britain from 1714 until shortly before the publication of this map through a personal union of the crowns, beginning when George I inherited both thrones and continuing under George II, George III, George IV, and William IV. In 1837, following the death of William IV, the British throne passed to Queen Victoria, but Hanover, governed by Salic law, excluded female succession in favour of the nearest male heir. The crown therefore passed to Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, who became King of Hanover. This ended the Anglo-Hanoverian union, and from then on Hanover followed an independent course in German politics until its annexation by Prussia in 1866. by Wyld, James. Published 1843 [dated].
