Description
Kam Cheung Ling was born in Hong Kong in 1911; he was mentored by Mr Xu Yongqing who was the pioneer of Chinese Watercolor Painting. After moving to Macao in the 50s of the last century, he engaged in Art Design. Art Creation and Art Education. During his later years, in order to provide opportunities to the youngsters who were gifted in painting yet without affordability to learn, he educated everyone regardless of background and gave lessons for free without asking for returns. Master Kam is publicly known as a prolific professional painter, going out every morning for sketching had already become his habit. Over a few decades, he had gone through every street and alley, fish shack and suburb in Macao, and had painted many people's livelihoods and stories. To maintain a simple life, he consigned his paintings to galleries in Macao and Hong Kong. As a result, his artworks were widely spread abroad. Besides, he once held his solo exhibition locally and in Portugal, many of his masterpieces were sold to overseas collectors, Macao government and non-governmental institutions for acquisition. He was so diligent in creative work that thousands of his works had recorded the vast changes in Macao society of the past, and its transformations as time goes by. His works are not only high in artistic value, but also the evocative "Historical Paintings of Macao".
Mr Kam Cheong Ling was skillful in watercolor painting: he sometimes tried his hand at Oil Painting and Ink Painting as well. Kam's painting style integrates the strong points from different painters yet carries its own characteristics. He had never been delighted by his students' works which were done in his shadow. Instead, he always encouraged them to create their own painting style. Today, his apprentices have made their achievements in various fields of art and related industries. Apart from their own efforts, it is indeed attributed to Master Kam's inspiration and wholehearted guidance in those years. My respected teacher was indifferent to fame and wealth, and he never regarded himself as a master. He had numerous friends amongst the artistic circles and was always willing to interact with people who shared common interests. He deemed Macao as his home, and loved the people and things in Macao. As well as an art practitioner, he was also a good teacher favored by people. He worked hard quietly and set a good example; he considered students as his children and did his utmost to support those talented youths, and his noble character and uprightness were admirable. Therefore, it is entirely justifiable to acclaim him as the "Master of Watercolor Painting in Generation". In 1981, Mr Kam Cheong Ling had painted a set of four stamps "IV Centenary of the Death of Luis de Cam?es" for Macao Post and Telecommunication Office (presently Macao Post).
