Description

An exceptional 19th century carved and polychromed wood figural tobacconist trade sign, depicting a young military officer seated atop an oversized tobacco pipe, the figure wearing a blue military tunic with molded epaulettes, white trousers, and a painted hat, retaining an expressive hand-carved face and traces of the original painted decoration throughout, fitted with the original wrought iron suspension rings; approximately 25 in. high, 9¼ in. wide, 36 in. deep. Wear throughout, including material loss and a rich patina, indicative of age.
