Gothic Revival Carved Wood Herald With Lion Shield

Description

A 19th century Continental carved wood hanging figure in the Gothic taste, depicting a young herald holding a shield carved in relief with a rampant lion crest, the figure carved with a hooded garment and stylized facial features, the dark stained surface retaining traces of a gilt finish; approximately 17½ in. high, 4 in. wide, 7½ in. deep. Some areas of loss to both the gilt and the wood; one repair to the shield; loss to the sword or flag; the hanging apparatus a more recent addition.
