Description
Masterful oil painting is signed with the artist's later New York National Academy mark and features a chiaroscuro background with smoothly rendered features, reflecting the artist's traditional academic training. Enoch Wood Perry Jr. (1831–1915) was a highly versatile 19th-century American painter internationally recognized for his genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes. After studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and under Thomas Couture, Perry traveled extensively—from the American West with Albert Bierstadt to Hawaii—before settling in New York City as a prominent member of the National Academy of Design. The painting is housed in a period gilt wood frame measuring approximately 38 1/4 in. H x 32 3/4 in. W x 3 1/4 in. D. Condition notes include some loss and tears to the canvas, craquelure throughout, discoloration on the reverse, and loss and wear to the frame consistent with age.
