  • Description: Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1598-1671) Chronologiae Reformatae. Bologna: Ex Typographia Haeredis Dominici Barberij, 1669 Book on chronology that covers topics like time measurement, calendar systems, and annals of world history from creation to 1668. It is divided into sections that detail chronologies of biblical and church figures, rulers, and other historical events. Three folio volumes bound in two; half-title present in first volume; added engraved title in volume two; the two volumes bound in uniform full original vellum with manuscript titles on spines (some wear and discoloration, one of the spines is damaged) Folio: 14 x 9 1/4 in. Ex libris Professor, Astronomer, Historian & Bibliophile Owen Gingerich. Text in Latin Giovanni Battista Riccioli SJ (1598 – 1671) was an Italian astronomer and a Catholic priest in the Jesuit order. He is known, among other things, for his experiments with pendulums and with falling bodies, for his discussion of 126 arguments concerning the motion of the Earth, and for introducing the current scheme of lunar nomenclature. He is also widely known for discovering the first double star. He argued that the rotation of the Earth should reveal itself because on a rotating Earth, the ground moves at different speeds at different times.
