Description
Map of Extension Lines into Metro-land [on reverse side: Diagram of Lines in and near London]. This 1925 Map of Extension Lines into Metro-Land promotes the idealised suburban lifestyle offered by the Metropolitan Railway’s northwest expansion from central London into the Chilterns. The concept of Metro-land, developed by the railway company in the early 20th century, championed a blend of rural tranquillity and easy urban access. Marketing highlighted green spaces, spacious homes, and a cleaner environment in towns like Harrow, Wembley, Rickmansworth, and Amersham, all within commuting distance of central London, underscored by the thirteen golf courses marked on the map. Popularized by Metro-land guidebooks and later by John Betjeman’s nostalgic 1973 documentary, the concept of Metro-land remains a key chapter in London's development, part of its psyche and deeply ingrained in its cultural memory. An example of this now scarce map is displayed at the London Transport Museum. It has map of the route continuation and connections in inner London on the reverse side. . Hanbury, Tomsett & Co.
