Description
Historic York - A map of Modern York showing those buildings of interest erected from the earliest times until the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign'. A charming 1947 pictorial map of York, England, created by York-born artist Estra Clark. Oriented to the northeast, it highlights central York between the River Foss (Browney Dyke) and the River Ouse, illustrating the city’s medieval and other significant buildings "erected within the city walls from earliest times until the beginning of Queen Victoria's Reign." The map weaves together anecdotal and historical details about key sites, events, and figures, along with folklore and local characters. It features a decorative border, the city’s coat of arms, and a title cartouche embellished with historical figures. A vignette titled "A Brief History," adorned with a jester and windrose, provides additional context in the lower right corner. Printed by Ben Johnson and Company of York, the map exists in two versions: a full-colour edition, as seen here, and a three-colour variant. Clark, a school teacher, commercial artist, and mapmaker, is also celebrated for her maps of English towns and her Old Testament map of the Holy Land. by Clark, Estra. Published 1947.
