A German military intelligence map produced during the early planning for Operation Seelöwe (Sea Lion), the intended Nazi invasion of England, issued strictly for Official Use Only and forming one of four sectional sheets covering London and its environs. Compiled in the weeks following the fall of France, it was created specifically for invasion and occupation planning, the legend identifying barracks, hospitals, railyards, key transport infrastructure and industrial facilities vital to the German war machine—explosives works, machinery plants, metal-fabrication sites, and oil-storage or distillation depots—together with public buildings essential for administrative control. Most chilling is the symbol for art collections, a detail which, given the systematic Nazi looting of cultural property elsewhere in Europe, underscores the wider intentions of occupation policy. On 2 July 1940 the Wehrmacht High Command instructed the services to begin preliminary invasion planning; this sheet, dated July 1940, is a direct product of that order. Prepared by IV.
