The map is bordered by a humorous Scots verse, “The Warrior, or How Mither Earth through Wrath Arran shaped,” issued “with apologies to McGonagall”—a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Victorian poet William McGonagall who gained notoriety as an extremelt bad poet. Written in a deliberately exaggerated, declamatory style, the poem blends geology, myth, and folk belief as affectionate parody rather than quotation. No separate author is credited, and the verse appears to have been composed specifically for the map. A glossary of Scots terms is included in the margins to aid the reader. .
