The South Prospect of Knole &c.'. A fine bird’s-eye view of Knole Park and House, Sevenoaks, Kent — today in the care of the National Trust. Originally built in the 15th century for Thomas Bourchier, Archbishop of Canterbury, Knole later became the seat of the Sackville family. Its most celebrated modern descendant, Vita Sackville-West, immortalised the estate in Knole and the Sackvilles (1922), a classic of English country-house literature; her lover, Virginia Woolf, drew upon both the house and Sackville-West’s ancestry in her novel Orlando. The house was given to the National Trust in 1947. Knole Park also entered popular culture as a filming location for the The Beatles’ promotional video for Strawberry Fields Forever.
