Description
Derbyshire'. A richly decorative illustrated map of Derbyshire, published shortly after the Second World War to commemorate the county’s contribution to Britain’s wartime economy and resilience. The map details agricultural production—including dairy farming, sugar beet, wheat, and potatoes—alongside coal mining, quarrying, and other key industries that sustained the war effort. Inset panels depict notable houses and landmarks such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, and Kedleston Hall, while text panels reference wartime activities including Starfish bomber decoy sites. The military roles of the Indian Mule Corps and the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry are recorded. Heraldic devices, regimental insignia, and county arms enhance the design, reinforcing its ceremonial character. A prominent quotation from Winston Churchill "All the great struggles of history have been won by superior willpower wresting victory in the teeth of odds or upon the narrowest of margins" underscores themes of endurance and national resolve. Both celebratory and informative, the map is a vivid example of post-war British pictorial cartography and regional pride. . Devised by Donald McCullough. Designed and drawn by Ernest Clegg. Published 1946. Decorative colour county map. Size 42 x 55 cm | 16.5 x 21.5 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
