The map records patterns of wartime food production across the Riding, alongside the Wolds training area and the role of the Carnaby emergency landing ground, credited with saving the lives of many RAF and USAAF airmen. Text panels reference the wartime expansion of British farming, the activities of the Women’s Institutes, and civil defence measures, while inset views depict landmarks including York Minster, Beverley Minster and Burton Agnes Hall. Maritime scenes emphasise the importance of the Humber estuary and the eastern seaboard. Heraldic devices, civic arms, and regimental insignia enrich the design. A quotation from Winston Churchill—“Come then: let us to the task, to the battle, to the toil, each to our part, each to our station…”—reinforces the map’s patriotic purpose, making it both a decorative work and a vivid record of regional pride in wartime Britain. .
