Chepsted Place, one of ye Seats of David Polhill Esqr.'. Chipstead Place, near Chevening, originated as part of the medieval manor of the de Chepsted family and is first recorded in the late Elizabethan period. Passing through the Cranmer, Herrys, Thomas and Polhill families, it remained a notable Kentish seat for centuries. The house shown was erected around 1700 by William Emerton and later re-acquired by the Polhills. In the nineteenth century it was let to prominent tenants, and during the First World War served as a hospital for wounded Belgian soldiers. After the war the house was stripped and demolished in 1932. Today the site survives chiefly as parkland, partly occupied by the Chipstead Place Lawn Tennis Club, with only minor estate buildings remaining. . Thomas Badeslade delin. John Harris Fecit.
