Description
Historic Canterbury — [A pictorial map showing buildings of interest and incidents connected with the city's history from its foundation until the present day]. An attractive 1952 pictorial map of Canterbury by Estra Clark, the York-born artist and schoolteacher whose post-war town maps combined antiquarian learning with light illustrative wit. Issued as a folding map by Waterlow & Sons of London and Dunstable, it presents the city as a dense historical pageant, centred on the Cathedral and tracing streets, gates, churches, hospitals, abbeys and civic landmarks from Roman Durovernum through Augustine, Becket, Chaucer’s pilgrims and the medieval city walls. Clark fills the plan with lively captions, figures and vignettes, including the West Gate, Dane John Gardens, St Augustine’s Abbey, St Dunstan’s, the Norman Castle and a large Canterbury Pilgrims scene. Decorative border, compass rose, city arms and title cartouche complete a highly engaging mid-century historical town map. by Clark, Estra. Published 1952. Vintage pictorial bird's eye view city plan. Size 37 x 49 cm | 14.5 x 19.5 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. This is a folding map. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain. Tags: 1952, Ben Johnson & Co., Canterbury, Clark Estra, Kent, Map, Pictorial maps
