Description
Quay at Straddon [Staddon] point, near Plymouth. One of Daniell’s most atmospheric Plymouth views, showing the little quay below Staddon Point — captioned “Straddon point” on the plate — on the eastern side of Plymouth Sound. From this strategic shoreline, long associated with coastal defence and later batteries, the eye runs across the water towards the great Plymouth Breakwater, then a major feat of naval engineering transforming the Sound into a safer anchorage. Daniell gives the scene both precision and poetry: small craft, working figures, the low quayside and the open sweep of sea and sky are rendered with the quiet luminosity of his hand-coloured aquatints. The view remains strikingly recognisable today, with coast, water and breakwater little altered. A highly appealing Devon subject, combining picturesque topography, naval history and fine aquatint book illustration. . Drawn and engraved by William Daniell. Published 20 May 1825 [dated]. Antique hand-coloured aquatint. Size 23 x 31 cm | 9.0 x 12.0 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Very good with broad margins. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is plain.
