His wife fastens a crossbody satchel while his son holds his powder horn. At right, a nursemaid holds a copy of the Declaration of Independence, underscoring the sacrifices made in the struggle for American independence from Great Britain.

Although depicting a scene from the American Revolution, this engraving was not produced during that period. It was published during the second year of the American Civil War (1861–1865), when such patriotic imagery was widely used to inspire national unity and support for the Union.
