A Map of Oman in Arabia'. "A Map of Oman in Arabia" is the first modern map of Oman based on actual observations by European explorers in the interior, also covering parts of the eastern United Arab Emirates ("Debai" (Dubai) and "Sharja" (Sharjah) are marked on the map along the "Pirate Coast"). Published to accompany James Wellsted's initial account of his travels in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, this map documents Wellsted's exploration of previously uncharted regions. In recognition of his work, Wellsted was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 6 April 1837. His detailed accounts provide invaluable descriptions of Oman's geography and culture at this time. The accompanying text article describing his travels will be included with the map. This is the first issue of Wellsted's map, originally published in the Journal in 1837.
