Original lithographed physical map prepared to accompany a paper by Charles William Wilson, and engraved by Edward Weller, issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society. Wilson was a central figure in the modern scientific mapping of Palestine and Jerusalem. In 1864 he directed the pioneering Ordnance Survey of Jerusalem, which resulted in the most accurate map of Jerusalem to date, identified the structure now known as Wilson's Arch, and carried out the first comprehensive and methodical study of the stonework of the Haram el-Sharif (Temple Mount) walls. The Jerusalem Post has noted that his survey "served as the basis for all future Jerusalem research". In 1867, working with the Palestine Exploration Fund, Wilson played a leading role in the Survey of Palestine and conducted one of the earliest major excavations on the Temple Mount. .
