Description
[Hejiezhen Babu District, Hezhou, Guangxi]. A Qing manuscript county map of He County, Guangxi, dated Xianfeng 3 (1853), executed in brush and ink on paper, showing the county seat at present-day Hejie, on the site of the Linhe Old City. Conceived as an administrative and topographical overview, the map was subsequently augmented with a series of red overpasted annotations, apparently marking the locations of "bandit" or "rebel" encampments, as well as markets said to have been destroyed. These additions may relate either to the insurgency and bandit crisis of the early Xianfeng period or to the later Chen Jingang crisis, both within the broader era of the Taiping Rebellion. The He County gazetteer records that in Xianfeng 3 (1853) "bandits swarmed up", local militia was organized, and Zhang Rongzu was stationed on the border to suppress them; it also notes serious factional and communal violence in He County during the early Xianfeng years. The gazetteer further states that in Xianfeng 8 (1858) Chen Jingang attacked He County from Huaiji, seized the north-western suburb and the lower riverside quarter, mined the walls with gunpowder, and, after a siege of more than fifty days, took the city. A military history adds that He County remained in rebel hands for approximately two years, and that in 1860 Qing and Hunan forces burned rebel stockades in the large market east of the city before retaking the county seat - a sequence that may accord more closely with the wording of the red annotations.
