Description
Thelma Gladys Speed Houston was born in the Bronx, New York City on December 3, 1914. Thelma Speed was artistically inclined at an early age and studied at the Pratt Institute. For several years she was a textile designer for Sulka & Company and a colorist for St. Andrews Textile Company. She exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1939. By the 1940s she had moved to San Diego County where she painted expressionist watercolors, often of the San Diego cityscape. She held watercolor workshops for small groups and exhibited locally. Several trips were made to foreign places, and she spent long periods on Maui in Hawaii. A prolific painter, she painted a watercolor each day for 50 years. She died in Encinitas, California on December 11, 2000.
