An outstanding George III baluster-form mug tankard, crafted in solid sterling silver (.925) with an exquisitely gilded interior , hallmarked for Newcastle, 1774 by the distinguished silversmith John Langlands

Composition & Technique
Form: Elegant baluster body raised on a spread circular foot
Decoration: With later applied late Victorian 19th century hand-chased floral and foliate motifs with sunflower heads , scrolling vines, and garlands, surrounding a vacant scrolled cartouche
Handle: Tongue-capped scroll handle
Interior: Lavish original gilding
Craftsmanship: Heavy gauge silver at 10.78 Troy ozt (335.2 grams)

Biography of the Maker: John Langlands (1713–1793)
John Langlands was one of the most celebrated silversmiths of Newcastle upon Tyne .
1754: Began in partnership with John Goodrick after the death of master Isaac Cookson.
1757: Continued independently after Goodrick’s death.
1778–1795: Formed the famous partnership Langlands & Robertson, prolific and widely respected.
His wife, son Robert II, and later his widow Dorothy continued the workshop until 1814.
The Langlands workshops became renowned for their artistry—particularly sugar tongs ��—rivaling the best London makers of the era.
