Description
A beautiful and authentic mid-19th-century French bronze frog, cast in a Parisian workshop around c.1850. This charming small sculpture is crafted in the naturalistic animalier style made famous in France by artists such as Fratin, Barye, and Jules Moigniez. Modelled in the manner of Moigniez, it displays the soft, rounded contours and lifelike realism characteristic of the mid-century Parisian school. As typical for workshop bronzes of this type, the piece is unsigned, yet the craftsmanship is unmistakably French.
Cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, the frog has developed a rich, naturally aged 19th-century patina of deep brown and olive, with warm highlights from generations of handling. The underside retains the original casting vent hole, entirely correct for Parisian production of the era.
Bronzes of this naturalistic animalier type were widely collected in the mid-19th century, notably by William T. Walters, whose celebrated collection of French bronzes helped shape connoisseurship in the field.

No cracks or repairs. The original underside casting vent hole remains intact. The brighter highlights, especially at the toes, result from natural age-related handling and are entirely correct.
