Original blind-tooled pigskin binding (stained and rubbed, front hinge cracked; without the brass clasps).

First edition of the sermon collection of the Eisleben theologian Hieronymus Mencel (1517–1590), who attended lectures in Wittenberg in 1540 by the reformers Luther, Melanchthon, Justus Jonas, Johannes Bugenhagen, and Caspar Cruciger.
The title page has a large tear (half of the printer's mark is lost), the first two leaves of the preface have a gap in the text block (loss of text, repaired), and the following leaves have a small hole in that area.
The final leaf with the colophon also has a tear at the top.
The paper is browned due to age, and there are some period marginal annotations at the beginning.
The pastedown with 19th-century ownership inscriptions.
The pigskin binding shows, in the center panels of the covers, the allegory of Justitia with her attributes of scales and sword, and Lucretia stabbing herself.
