Civil War Era Tompkins Stretcher, designed by Brigadier General Charles Henry Tompkins, circa 1866
manufactured by Henry Simons, U.S. National Wagon Works, Philadelphia
green-painted wood with iron hardware, leather strapwork, and canvas bed and pillow, the painted wood frame marked in stencil, "Henry Simons", "U.S. National Wagon Works", "Tompkins Stretcher" and "Pat'd Aug. 7th".

Condition
Stretcher modified by having stretcher handles sawn off on both sides (there were four in total). Lacking: wheels and springs (which were detachable), metal arm rests, wood leg rest, rolled cloth sheet, some leather straps, and expandable sunshade. Some rust to iron hardware, stains to canvas, several bolts missing (modern replacements provided), wear from use.
