The set features a yellowish-cream ground characteristic of early 20th-century Royal Doulton series ware. The grouping includes a large octagonal bowl featuring the character Sam Weller from The Pickwick Papers, a tall lidded coffee pot, a two-handled sugar bowl, a small pitcher or creamer, and teacups with matching saucers. The majority of the pieces depict the character Sairey Gamp and are inscribed with the quote, The Best of men Are Only Men-at-The Best. The saucers are decorated with a border pattern of various teapots and cups. Marks on the undersides include the Royal Doulton Dickens-Ware backstamp with a portrait of Charles Dickens, the standard lion over crown mark, and pattern numbers D2799 and D6327.
