This headrest features motifs of a warrior's shield, cross, checkerboard, and sunbeam designs.

Provenance: Acquired in the early 1980s, Lionel Finneran, South Africa | Private Collection

Literature: Headrests of Southern Africa: The Architecture of Sleep, Goodall and Zimer, ppg. 145, 148-149, 172 illustrate closely related headrests in southern Msinga style, particularly carved by Mlewu Mkhize

Condition

Good condition. This example has assorted scratches, scuffs and finish wear from age and use. Lower edge of one side has an older 3-inch loss near center.
