These large and dramatic masks are characterized by enlarged facial features, including deeply recessed eye sockets that emphasize supernatural vision, pronounced teeth suggesting power, and a wrinkled brow denoting seniority. They represent a royal male ancestor, often depicted wearing a chiefly headband with a zigzag motif, as seen on the present example. Used over many years, and sometimes across generations, this mask retains traces of feathers at the crown and remnants of a beard composed of synthetic fibers, likely a later replacement added during its continued ceremonial use. The surface displays a varied field patina with non-active insect flight holes.
