18th century netsuke of smiling Gama Sennin petting his constant companion - the three-legged toad. Somehow netsuke manages to convey the relationship between two characters. Strong early carving, wonderful stern face of almost portrait quality, excellent carving of his leaf cape, eyes of both characters are inlaid with black horn. Wonderful patina consistent with age, as well as early type large himotoshi characteristically positioned through the back and down to the bottom of the netsuke...
