This exceptional early 20th-century drypoint etching by listed California printmaker William A. Eskey (1891"“1937) beautifully captures the iconic Spanish Colonial Revival architecture of the California Tower and Quadrangle in Balboa Park, San Diego.
Executed in the early 1930s, the piece showcases Eskey's mastery of the drypoint medium. The print boasts the rich, velvety line qualities characteristic of hand-scored metal plates, heavily emphasized in the dark foliage and intricate architectural details of the soaring tower. Flocks of birds circle the ornate dome, giving the scene a wonderful sense of life and movement.
Signature & Margins:
The print is highly documented with an in-plate signature (""W.A. ESKEY"") in the lower right corner. Below the crisp, deeply impressed plate mark, the artist has hand-titled the piece ""Balboa Park, San Diego"" in pencil on the lower left margin and hand-signed it ""W.A. Eskey [Eskey]"" in pencil on the right.
Provenance & Framing:
The reverse side features incredible historic provenance, retaining its original 1930s paper backing label from the renowned H. S. Swasey Art Gallerylocated at 2289 Shattuck Ave in Berkeley, California.
Excellent vintage condition for its age. The paper remains remarkably bright, clean, and free of heavy foxing, water stains, or severe discoloration. A very minor, faint mat line is present along the extreme outer edge of the paper border where it meets the historic matting, consistent with age and original materials. Housed in its period-authentic slim black wood frame."
