Description
A nuanced mixed-media abstraction by American artist Kevin Tolman (born 1949, Detroit), a long-established figure in New Mexico whose work reflects decades of engagement with landscape, perception, and intuitive mark-making. Trained at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Art School of the Society of Arts and Crafts, Tolman moved west in the 1970s and has since developed a deeply personal abstract language rooted in place, memory, and the physical act of drawing and layering.
Titled "In the Bosque," the work refers to the cottonwood forests that line the Rio Grande and form one of the state's most distinctive and contemplative landscapes. Rather than depicting the Bosque literally, Tolman evokes it through dense, interwoven marks, muted earth tones, and a sense of vertical depth suggestive of trunks, undergrowth, and filtered light. The composition reflects his interest in how landscapes are experienced over time: partially seen, remembered, and felt rather than observed in a single glance.
Framed and signed. Titled/dated verso. This is a beautiful, place-specific work that speaks to the quiet complexity of the New Mexico landscape and Tolman's enduring connection to it.
