This antique industrial hanging spring balance scale was manufactured by the Hanson Scale Co. in Chicago, Illinois. Constructed with a rectangular steel housing, it features an inset brass faceplate with incised and blackened text. The top of the faceplate is marked HANSON SCALE CO. MADE IN CHICAGO, U. S. A. The bottom section indicates CAPACITY 100 LB BY 1 LB, MODEL NO 0, and APPROVED TYPE C, with a notation to ADJ. SCREW BELOW accompanied by a downward arrow. The scale is graduated from 0 to 100 with numeric markers every 5 units and individual line increments for each pound. The instrument is fitted with a large circular steel hanging ring at the top and a substantial steel hook at the bottom for suspended weighing. A movable metal pointer is present to indicate weight. This type of scale is frequently referred to as a cotton scale. 16 in long.
