The crowned insignia features the intertwined cipher "FJ" of Emperor Franz Joseph I, while the reverse medallion is dated 1849, commemorating the year the order was instituted. The center medallion is of hinged construction and opens as a locket compartment, an uncommon and desirable feature found on early examples. The badge bears the maker's mark "G R", a prestigious maker known for producing high-quality imperial decorations during the mid- to late-19th century.

The decoration is suspended from a substantial gold chain bearing British import hallmarks and is accompanied by its original fitted presentation case. An exceptional example of Austro-Hungarian phaleristic craftsmanship combining historical significance, fine enameling, and substantial intrinsic gold value.
