Description
6 1/2 x 3 5/8 in (16.4 x 9.2 cm)
Provenance and Authentication:
According to the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided by the consignor, this collectible was subjected to a forensic examination. The accompanying documentation states that the signatures were evaluated with reference to multiple characteristics, including ink deposition, material and aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical context. Based on the examination described in these documents, the authentication provider concluded that the findings were consistent with the attributed signatures. The LOA and COA provided by the consignor accompany the lot.
An Apollo 8 First Day Cover, bearing signatures attributed to the complete mission crew: Frank Borman (1928-2023), James Lovell (b. 1928), and William Anders (1933-2024).
The illustrated cachet identifies Apollo 8 - U.S. First Manned Lunar Orbital Flight and depicts portraits of the three astronauts. At right is the celebrated lunar-themed "In the Beginning God..." postage stamp, accompanied by a Houston, May 5, 1969 cancellation and "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE" marking.
The stamp has an especially meaningful relationship with Apollo 8. During the mission's historic Christmas Eve broadcast from lunar orbit in December 1968, Borman, Lovell, and Anders read passages from Genesis to a worldwide television audience. The wording appearing on the stamp consequently creates a direct historical association between the postal issue and the mission represented by the cover.
The three autographs are individually positioned across the central portion of the envelope. James Lovell's signature appears above the cancellation with flowing connected movement and an extended terminal stroke; Frank Borman's autograph is more compact and rapidly inclined; while William Anders's signature is prominently executed across the lower portion with broad lateral movement and a long finishing stroke. Their differing proportions, slants, letter constructions, and writing rhythms provide useful characteristics for comparison with documented crew autograph material.
Apollo 8 became the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Moon, and orbit another celestial body. Its December 1968 mission remains one of the defining achievements preceding Apollo 11.
The combination of a complete three-member crew signature set with an Apollo 8-specific First Day Cover and historically related postage issue gives the piece strong appeal to collectors of NASA, Apollo history, postal history, space exploration, and historic autographs.
