Description
10 7/8 x 8 1/4 in (27.8 x 21 cm)
This historical engraved portrait bears the autograph of General John A. Logan (1826-1886), one of the Union Army's most distinguished Civil War commanders, United States Senator, and a principal founder of what later became Memorial Day.
Signed prominently in dark ink above the engraved portrait, the signature exhibits Logan's elegant nineteenth-century handwriting style. The inscription features flowing cursive letterforms, elongated ascenders, confident horizontal movement, and a naturally connected execution characteristic of period fountain-pen writing. The generous placement above the portrait provides excellent visual presentation while preserving the integrity of the engraved image.
Portrait engravings were among the most popular autograph media during the late nineteenth century, frequently signed by military leaders, politicians, and public figures at commemorative events or for admirers. Works combining an original signature with an engraved likeness are significantly more desirable than unsigned prints, particularly when the subject and autograph correspond directly.
As one of the Union Army's most respected generals and a key figure in post-war American political history, signed portrait engravings of John A. Logan remain highly collectible within Civil War, presidential-era, and Americana collections.
