Description
Abstract figural painting on board by self taught outsider artist Purvis Young. The colors of pale salmon and pink-peach blend effortlessly with blacks, grays and the colors of a Miami sunsetting hour.....or following a rain. Young used all found objects and this painting is done on board and framed with pieces of black painted wood strips. Meeting and talking with Purvis prior to his major breakthrough and acceptance as a masterful outsider painter and artist was a high point in my career of antiques, interiors and art.
Mr Young was a Miami, Florida native whose works consisted of blends of colors and collage and found objects. Young portrayed the experience of African Americans in the south including in Miami, Florida and in his adoptive neighborhood of Overtown. Young gained recognition as a contemporary, self taught outsider artist with celebrities such as Jane Fonda who saw him on a trip to South Florida, among many others, as admirers, followers and collectors. His works can be found in the permanent and traveling collections of over 50 museums nationwide and internationally. Some of them include The Smithsonian, The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The American Folk Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2006, a documentary on Mr Young and his native Miami neighborhood was made while he was still working. This is one of his special pieces we are fortunate to offer for sale.
