The original work on paper is one of two known original treatments of this same subject and composition. A slightly different 1939 version bearing a Whitney Museum label and the same title is listed as having been exhibited in the Whitney's 1941 annual. In their catalog, the Whitney describes the medium as 'ink brush' which also describes the present work with its flecked and stippled touches of white on the vegetation, a characteristic that sets it apart from the 1939 version. Dehn returned to this subject again in 1941 as a lithograph issued in an edition of 60. Together, the 1939, 1940 and 1941 versions show Dehn repeatedly reworking the same Mexican subject It follows his first Guggenheim Fellowship in 1939, which supported travel through the American Southwest and Mexico. This work was aquired directly from the artist's family.

Sight size measures 21 x 15.5 with a framed size of 35 x 26.5 inches.
