This lot contains a post-WW2 manufactured Czechoslovakian copy of the German ZF4 telescopic rifle sight in a post-war Czech scope mount most commonly used on the Gewehr 43. During WW2, these scopes were made at München, Opticotechna GmbH in Prerau Czechoslovakia which continued under Czech operation after the end of the German occupation. Czechoslovakia was very concerned about the Soviet Union (fears that proved well founded) following the conclusion of hostilities which lead to a rapid rearmament that included lots of leftover German equipment. The scope in overall good condition with light to moderate haze in the optics commensurate with it's age, a nice high-polish blued finish on the scope body and a lightly worn blued finish on the scope mount. The reticle is a clear picket and post design that was carried over from the original ZF4. Markings on the left side of the scope tube include the Czech rampant lion property mark, the maker's mark, followed by " 4x 4,5* " and the serial number (1415). The top of the scope is marked with the makers mark, " 4x 4,5* " and a lined-through serial number (27921). The windage turret displays hashmarks and the elevation turret contains range markings 1-8 (100-800 meters). Both turrets click positively when adjusted and appear to function properly. The scope mount is marked on the locking lever "Volne" (free) and "Pevne" (firm), an "E7" followed by the Czech rampant lion property mark and "48" which is likely the year of manufacture, and serial number "7019 rid" on the lower right quadrant. The scope is held firmly by the mount and the attachment levers seem to function properly. The ZF4 pattern optic was made popular on the German Gewehr 43 rifle for intended use as designated marksman's rifles which represented some of the earliest efforts to equip a large portion of the infantry with telescopic sights. This was learned the hard way through the lessons of the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland and Germany's own experience on the eastern front. The G43 went on to serve a limited role in the hands of French and Czech troops following WW2 which was a significant upgrade from the bolt action rifles they would have otherwise been issued with, however, this was quickly phased out in the early 1950s for more modern domestic designs. This scope would make a great addition to any Gewehr 43 that wants to stretch its legs to longer ranges.
