GREEN BROS. BREECH LOADING PERCUSSION BOLT ACTION CARBINE. Cal. .577. Bbl. 24" (rifled bore) having barley corn front sight and stepped base ladder carbine rear sight. Mfg. in England about the middle 1800's; similar rifles used by the Confederates of the Civil War and later in the Serbian-Ottoman war (1876-1878). Many Green Bros. rifles and carbines were distributed by E. M. Reilly. The barrel of this carbine has unreadable makers (or distributors) markings along with "No. 10526". Its 1862 patent was for a breech loading self contained paper cartridge (including bullet) that was ignited by percussion caps. Noticeably more fancy than the basic military variation having engraved sculptured tangs and trigger guard. Similar styled contoured metal buttplate with widows peak and light engraving. Barrel has multiple Birmingham proofs plus "25" twice. Underside of barrel has solid rib with 2 thimbles plus swivel eye on rear barrel thimble.
