Artist Biography: Erté (Romain de Tirtoff)

Romain de Tirtoff (1892–1990), who designed under the pseudonym Erté (the French pronunciation of his initials, R.T.), was a brilliant Russian-born French artist and designer whose multi-faceted career spanned fashion, jewelry, costume design, and interior decor. Globally heralded as the "Father of Art Deco," Erté style defined the visual narrative of the Roaring Twenties, famously creating over 240 iconic cover illustrations for Harper's Bazaar, alongside lavish costume and set designs for the Folies Bergère, Ziegfeld Follies, and major Hollywood films.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Erté experienced a historic global renaissance, translating his archival drawings into limited-edition fine art serigraphs and bronze sculptures. His works are characterized by a highly sophisticated use of intricate, geometric linework, stylized silhouettes, and rich, jewel-toned color fields accented by metallic foil detailing. Today, Erté's masterworks are permanently preserved in elite cultural repositories worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
