Description
A 1901-O US Morgan silver dollar. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The profile is surrounded by the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date 1901. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows within a laurel wreath, accompanied by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, and the motto In God we trust in Gothic script. A raised character O mint mark, indicating the New Orleans Mint, is located on the reverse, centered below the laurel wreath and above the letters DO in DOLLAR (photo 3). The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper with a reeded edge. Both the obverse and reverse exhibit peripheral rainbow toning.
Weight: 0.861 ozt. The coin is in circulated condition. The obverse shows moderate wear on the high points of Liberty’s hair, the cotton bolls, and the wheat stalks of the cap (photo 1). The reverse shows significant wear on the eagle’s breast feathers and the tops of the wings (photo 2). Numerous fine contact marks, hair lines, and small scratches are visible in the fields on both sides, particularly in front of Liberty’s face and in the upper reverse fields (photos 1 and 2). The reeded edge appears consistent without significant rim dings. No evidence of cleaning is visible.
