About the artist

Armando Bergallo (born 1942), born in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a Uruguayan artist working across painting, printmaking, drawing, and mural painting. He co-founded the Taller de Montevideo in 1963 and later established Taller Amsterdam in 1977 alongside José Gamarra, Anhelo Hernández, and Héctor Vilche. His practice developed across three cities: Montevideo until 1976, Amsterdam from 1976 to 1981, and Barcelona from 1981 onward.

Bergallo's work emerged from the context of Latin American conceptual art and political engagement, responding to the social and political conditions in Uruguay during the 1960s and 1970s. Through his involvement with the Taller de Montevideo, he participated in collaborative projects that combined artistic experimentation with social critique. The collective's approach emphasized dialogue and collective production, values Bergallo carried forward when he co-founded Taller Amsterdam after relocating to Europe.

Bergallo's work has been shown at major institutions including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and CAPC musée d'art contemporain in Bordeaux. The Taller de Montevideo participated in the IV Biennale de Paris in 1965. In 1979, Taller Amsterdam exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam with a presentation of paintings, objects, and projects.
