Flavio Emanuel Cabral was an American painter, muralist, and educator associated with mid-20th-century Los Angeles modernism. Born in New York City to Portuguese parents, he moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s and received important early training through the Federal Art Project before earning degrees in art education and painting. Cabral became known for murals, portraits, surreal and semi-abstract figure compositions, and a personal style he called “Spherism,” which adapted aspects of Cubism into rounded, volumetric forms; he later taught painting and art history for many years at Los Angeles Valley College.
