Maura Allen is an American painter, photographer, and mixed-media artist known for contemporary interpretations of the American West. Raised in Northern California, she earned a B.A. in Classical Studies/Latin from Stanford University and has worked with photography for nearly five decades, using her own black-and-white images of ranches, rodeos, horses, and Western life as the foundation for paintings, prints, sculpture, and glass. Now working from her studio in Abiquiú, New Mexico, Allen combines contemporary imagery with historic Western motifs, typography, and strong silhouettes to explore the relationship between the West’s lived reality and its enduring mythology.
