Description
Artist: Anthony Thieme (American, 1888-1954). Title: Winter Scene. Etching. Signed in plate lower left. Dimensions: 7" x 5". Matted and framed under glass: 12" x 9". Provenance: exhibited at Providence Art Club in 1929. Anthony Thieme was a Dutch-born American artist and accomplished printmaker best known for his New England landscapes and harbor scenes. After training in Europe, he settled in the United States and became closely associated with Rockport, Massachusetts, where he established the Thieme School of Art.Thieme was also a friend and painting companion of Rhode Island artist Antonio Cirino, part of the lively exchange between the Rockport and Providence art communities. Both artists were drawn to the working harbors, villages, and changing seasons of New England. Before becoming widely known for his colorful paintings, Thieme was a skilled etcher. His prints reveal the strength of his draftsmanship and his European training. In this winter scene, the limited black-and-white vocabulary of etching is particularly effective—the bare landscape, snow, architecture, and strong contrasts of winter light create an image that is quieter and more intimate than his familiar painted harbor scenes. An appealing example of the printmaking side of an artist better known today as one of Rockport’s important painters.
