Repeatedly, the scientists and the military and civilian leaders who participated in the decision to build and use the atomic bomb are asked this question. Very few who played key roles in arriving at the great decision are left to answer. Hence the 20th anniversary of the fateful date on which the bomb was dropped over Hiroshima sugggested itself as a propitious time for asking a leading representative among the survivors whether, in contemplating the past in the light of more recent knowledge, he would do it again, one page, light yellowing and creasing to upper margin, 4to, 6 August 1965

***Dr. Emilio Segrè was a Group Leader of the Los Alamos team.....the greatest scientific team ever assembled.. which designed, developed and fabricated the atomic bomb. He was one of Enrico Fermi's original associates at the University of Rome; winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. His answer:Under the circumstances prevailing at the time, yes. We had Hitler around. We knew the Nazis could make the bomb and were working on it. We would have been crazy not to make the bomb under the circumstances. We could not be sure atomic bombs would not start dropping on us. If that had happened, Hitler would have won the war. As for my approving the use of the bomb, the President had hardly any alternative. On the basis of the information available....the probability that the war would go on for a long time....... I thought, and still think, the decision was the only one possible. But I am glad I was not the President.
