Smuts (Jan) Two autograph letters signed ("J.Smuts")

The first letter, on Union Parliament-South Africa headed paper, to Mr Addison reads "I would gladly you any assistance & advice in my power. I fear it will be most difficult to get a position such as you desire in the Union. The severe drought has meant a great set-back to agriculture for the moment and large numbers of [?good] men are on the look out", two pages, 8vo, House of assembly, Cape Town, 28 May 1927, with mailing envelope; a second letter, to Mr Ashley, says "I am very sorry to hear of your health troubles and would gladly do what I can. It is most regrettable that Parliament has refused your petition. If you will tell me the exact facts I can look into the bill the Treasury at Reboua (?). Please send me a statement which I can bound to them and back as far as I can. I doubt whether an interview will carry the matter further, in view of what has happened. But a statement of the particulars will be helpful, I hope", two pages 8vo, Savoy Hotel, London, 8 October 1934, with mailing envelope; with a signature on a letter replying to an autograph request.
